On the road in Croatia

The rest of the 7 day bike ride took us past blue waters so clear that fish and the sea bottom were brightly visible, through villages and markets (and gelati stands everywhere), along wooded mountainous roads, and pigs turning on spits.

On days that I had my rain gear, it was sunny, and one day when I gave up carrying the rain coat, it rained for hours.

Highlights included Split with its Diocletian’s Palace, a 3rd century Roman citadel, now housing restaurants, hotels, shops, and apartments. The building shown above with marble columns imported from Egypt was the Emperor's residence.

Dubrovnik was the final stop.  The city was badly damaged by the Serbs throwing 1000 shells into a non-military target, but, except for the new orange tile roofs everywhere, it still looks medieval.  However, it has become a tourist city, alive now only in the summer and closed down in the winter with few permanent residents.
